Retrofitting Smart Home Technology Into an Older Adelaide Home

·7 min read

Most Adelaide homes were built before smart home tech existed. Here's how we approach retrofitting automation into established homes — without tearing up your walls.

Adelaide has a wonderful stock of character homes — Federation bungalows in Unley, Edwardian cottages in Norwood, mid-century houses in Burnside. These homes weren't designed with smart technology in mind, and running new cables through plaster and lath walls can be disruptive and expensive. But there are excellent wireless-first approaches that let you achieve a modern smart home without major construction.

Wireless Is Your Friend

Modern smart home protocols — Zigbee, Z-Wave, and the new Matter standard — use mesh networks where every device acts as a signal repeater. This means you can build reliable whole-home coverage without running a single cable. We've successfully automated heritage-listed homes in Adelaide where we couldn't touch the original fabric of the building.

The Panel-First Approach

One of the most impactful retrofits is a smart electrical panel upgrade. By adding a smart switching module at the switchboard, we can make existing lighting circuits smart without touching individual light fittings at all. This works especially well in older homes where fittings are ornate or heritage-significant.

Motorised Blinds and Curtains

Battery-operated motorised blinds (Somfy, Rollease Acmeda) are perfect for retrofit situations — no wiring required. With battery life of 1–3 years, these integrate seamlessly with the rest of your smart home. We've installed them in character homes across Norwood, Prospect, and North Adelaide where running new low-voltage cabling wasn't practical.

Smart Entrances Without the Drama

Replacing a deadlock with a smart lock is a 20-minute job that doesn't require an electrician. Most smart locks run on AA batteries (2-year life), communicate over Bluetooth or Z-Wave, and integrate with your existing alarm system. Similarly, smart video doorbells can reuse existing doorbell wiring or run on battery.

Planning a Retrofit: Our Process

We start every retrofit project with a free in-home assessment. We look at your existing electrical setup, note any heritage or structural constraints, and design a system that works with your home rather than fighting it. Most Adelaide retrofit projects take 1–3 days of installation. The result is a home that works smarter without having sacrificed any of its original character.
